Steampunk Geisha by mongrelmarie Steampunk Geisha by mongrelmarie
EDIT: Added more texture and a pattern to her kimono. Enriched the color of her clothing and added some patterns to a couple of the pillows. I don't want to make it too saturated as Steampunk colors are often more muted. But I think the red kimono now brings out her lips and beads. :heart:

I've had this concept in my head for a while now. A geisha in the steampunk genre, living in a submarine. Not only do you pay for some company, but you get one hell of a ride (and stealthy too -- perfect for those shady clientele). :D

Technically she is an Oiran, but people are more familiar with the term "geisha" and that's why I titled it what I did. :aww:

I hope everyone enjoys! :la:

Ok my last comment was not enough.. I love the Japanese culture and this is a marvelous rendition of the Geisha, with a unique take and your own flare added to it.

I've been playing around with redoing this picture.  Here are two of my sketches for it.  I'd love to hear your feedback on what you think does and does not work.

She's marvelous. She's so decadent and refined with the pipe and this ear-attached monocular. I want a monocular like this one! And this steam hairpins;( You've put so much detail into this work - it's truly amazing.

Cool I don't get to see Geisha done in steampunk often, if at all. It's a unique idea paired with a good eye to detail.

I couldnt accomplish a portrait that combines geisha with a sujet of an anglo-european theme. i worked on victorian themed browsergame, but this style-combination - it wouldnt look as suiting well as this labor when done by me ^^'

oh now I got the reason, why I think her pose is not geisha-typical...I just read you meant an oiran. ^^' :blush:

Here's what I love about this picture:
1.) Great use of light and shade to create a fantastic mood.
2.) The reflections in the monacle and reflected light on the geisha.
3.) The natural relaxed pose as the geisha reclines on the cushions.
4.) The fact that you kept the eyes simple. Many put tons of detail in the eye only to loose it all when you pull back to view the picture as a whole. What you did makes the eyes more believable.

I'm kind of stumbling through still with digital painting, especially when it comes to using the stylis pen. O_O For some reason I have a hard time controling it enough to paint the way I want to. I end up using my off hand, my right hand, to paint with a mouse. I'm not sure what the problem is, if it's lack of practice, using a traditional brush and paint for 10 years before I started getting into digital art, something not programed correctly with the tablet. I envy your ability to to do this digitally in such great detail. :3

I've been studying this picture and trying to think of ways to achieve the same effects and detail. :3

Thank you!

Honestly, digital painting is something I'm still trying to wrap my head around. I struggle with lighting, colors (especially skin), banding and numerous other things. It's definitely a learning process every piece I work on with this style of coloring. And if I didn't have a Cintiq that allowed me to color the actual screen, then I don't think I'd be able to do it at all. ^^;

Thanks for the feedback, Lady. :tighthug:

My pleasure. :) :tighthug:

It still found studying the picture a learning experience. :) I found out that half my problem was the tablet that I was given two years ago didn't have any of the registration codes or anything that would allow it to work properly. My husband bought me my own and it opened my eyes to what I could do with digital work.

My goal it to eventually get a Cintiq :heart:

i never understood the concept of steam punk. I know what it implies but what is the premise for its conceptualization?

It's basically a time era in Victorian era Britain when steam engines and technology are still in use. As in, what if technology continued to evolve the steam route and not the electrical route. But really, just Googling "Steampunk" would probably give you better results than anything I could try to explain. ^^;

Woosh. I think I just died a little. It's -ossum-.

And yes, the zoom ins is a great way to highlight some of the details AND it sort of gives the pic some fun dynamics. Overall, great job. Like really. Wow. D:

Umm . . . to call an oiran a geisha is like calling a porn star a Hollywood actress. It's disgraceful to knowingly call a prostitute a geisha. It's still an elegant picture, and I like it.
